ABOUT THE ARTIST
Michael Vaughan is an artist in his 70s who took up full time painting relatively late in life after a career in lighting and other product design. He has had successful exhibitions of his work in London and New York. He works from his home and studio in Hampshire.
His artwork, though appearing on the surface to be essentially abstract, actually deals with the real world. Faces, figures, landscapes and gardens are often there in his work, albeit obliquely. However his primary concern is with more formal qualities: composition, structure, rhythm, the use of space – and the ordering of shapes, lines and colours to maximise visual impact. Having said that, his approach is totally intuitive and instinctive. Much is achieved almost by accident. At the heart of it all, there is intense emotional involvement – personal impulses and feelings are the driving force.
